This is the third demo CD from Finnish metal band called NAILED COIL. Seemingly these guys are inspired by 90's bands such as PANTERA or FEAR FACTORY, with a bit of influence from death metal and recent metalcore scene. It's hard to label the band, as multiple styles mixed up together creating their own down-to-earth modern heavy music. Filled with dark, aggressive riffs and rough scream/howl vocals, this demo shows their ability to play instruments and make their music heavy and moody, but unfortunately failed to make everything sound consistent. It's clear that the band are trying to avoid mannerism by changing tempos or adding macho-choruses, clean vocals or harmonic leads etc., but the way they execute it still leaves room for improvement. With a little tightness and consistency added, who knows, we probably are talking about another promising metal band from Finland.

Lokakuussa 2002 perustettu 4/5 miehinen orkesteri veivaa perus-metallia puolinopealla tempolla. 4/5 miehinen siksi, että 2003 yhtyeen riveihin astui toinen kitaristi, joka ei kuitenkaan soita kyseessä olevalla promolla, vaan tämän alueen hoitaa rumpali. Tapaushan on ”NC:n” 3. EP ja kantaa nimeä ”This Is My War”.

Siinä kohtaa, kun aloitusraidan kuuluisi lyödä lapiolla naamaan, tuleekin taputtelua olkapäälle. Ei vakuuttava startti, mutta levyn kakkosraita on jo paljon menevämpi ja olisi kuulunut mielestäni avausraidaksi. Kolmas kokelas on siitä välimaastosta.

Kitarasoundit ovat hieman paperiset ja riffit paikka paikoin todella tylsiä, mutta löytyy levyltä kyllä kohtia joissa lähtee pää nyökkymään ja jalka vipattamaan. Melodiat ovat selvästi taka-alalla tuomassa vain syvyyttä. Vokaalit ovat pääasiassa örinää, joka toimii mielestäni keskitasoa paremmin, mutta ne muutamat puhtaat väläytykset, joita seasta löytyy, eivät vain sovi joukkoon. Basso hoitaa tehtävänsä mallikkaasti ja murisee varsin miehekkäästi varsinkin hitaissa osuuksissa. Rummut ovat monipuoliset ja hyvät, jonka lisäksi soundikin on saatu keskitason demosoundia paremmaksi.

Miinusta tulee siitä, että biiseistä puuttuu meininkiä ja sovitukset ovat hieman pomppivia tempon heitellessä puolelta toiselle, sekä kitarasoundista. Plussaa örinästä, rummuista ja rouheasta bassosta. Kokonaisuutena kehityskelpoinen.

Finnish Bay Area Thrash with “tough-guy-hardcore-singing” and some really well-done doomy passages. That’s the short synopsis of NAILED COIL’s new demo This Is My War. Now one could think that this band might perfectly attract attention of these hip Metalcore kids, but no way! NAILED COIL fortunately park one meter aside of this ground. This demo is more old-school without picking up usual clichés. Songwriting is versatile, almost progressive and not too intellectual and done are these 3 entertaining tracks This Is My War, My Disease and The Shine. Ok, at some points singer Aki Salmenoja starts with some pathetically clean vocal parts, but though it’s not sounding too stereotype for nowadays songwriting.

Nailed Coil is a finnish heavy band that started playing music back in 2002. The band was formed after the guys had an obsession; to play heavy metal. In year 2004 they participated into "Aani & Vimma" contest and they got into the semi final level which is good achievement for any promo band. Until now the guys have made 2 EP´s and already one music video as well.

This promo album titled "This Is My War" is bands third recording and it was recorded in their home studio. "This Is My War" consists of three really typical heavy metal songs titled as "This Is My War","The Shine" and the best song of the demo which is "My Disease".

There has been too many similar bands sounding exactly like Nailed Coil. The guys really need to find their own "thing" to succeed in heavy metal scene. "My Disease" is the best song of the outlet and it starts off really nicely but suddenly during the song the quality drops into same demo level and in the end it really wasn´t that astonishing at all. The guitar solos of the demo are maybe the most positive thing as well as the drum work from Eero. He is absolutely the best part of the band! The most big miss is the vocal content; the band really needs to think twice if they even need clean vocals on their tunes. I think there´s too much bands singing that way at the moment and a little variation would be good for all of us. I really consider your future more brighter without them. But still Aki Salmenoja has his time to develop himself as a clean vocalist.

Nailed Coil still has a long path ahead to rise into the finest top of finnish heavy metal. I warmly recommend each one of you to visit the guys MySpace page at www.myspace.com/nailedcoil and give them a shot. You don´t lose anything if you give them a chance unless you don´t get addicted to their sound!

Tuusulassa vaikuttavalta Nailed Coil:ilta on tullut kolmesta biisistä koostuva Promo 2005 -äänite. Vaikka teos onkin nauhoitettu bändin omalla treenikämpällä on tuotoksen äänimaisema täysin levytasoa. Musikaalisesti bändi jatkaa vahvasti siihen mihin edellisillä julkaisullaan jäi. Fear Factoryn tai Machine Headin linjoilla liikutaan edelleen. Musikaalisesti orkesteri ei onnistu vieläkään kuulostamaan tarvittavan omaperäiseltä, mutta itse biisit tuntuvat muuten monisäikeisemmiltä kuin ennen.

Tuotoksen onnistuneimmaksi yksittäiseksi biisiksi nousee kakkosbiisi My Disence, vaikka biisi onkin vahvasti Fear Factory -henkinen, pääsee biisissä orkesterin sävellystaito oikeuksiinsa. Pienoista irtiottoa esikuvista on ilmaisesti yritetty, sillä hetkellisesti etenkin kitaroinnissa on jopa rockmaisia nyansseja, joita olisi saanut olla enemmänkin. Laulupuolella orkesteri on mennyt aavistuksen eteenpäin, örinäpuolelle on saatu lisää voimaa, mutta edelleen puhtaat kertosäe-melodiat kuulostavat vahvasti jo moneen kertaa mainitulta Burton C. Bellin isännöimältä modernin metallin uranuurtajalta.

Promo 2005 -tuotos on monelta osin merkki Nailed Coilin kehittyneestä sävellystaidosta, eikä sen biiseissä ole valittamista. Orkesterin heikkoudeksi näkisinkin liiallisen esikuvien matkimisen. Ensi kerralla "pelkotehtaan" levyt visusti piirongin laatikkoon ja loota lukkoon sävellystilanteen ajaksi. Orkesteria voin kuitenkin lämpimästi suositella bändin esikuvista pitäville immeisille.

This is the second time that I have the luck to write the review of a demo of Nailed Coil, a young band that comes from Finland. The band still use to plays a mix of Gothenburg Death and Hardcore that I can maybe call Metalcore. This is not really original but actually this is probably not a point that the band wants to reach, no they’re just here to do something efficient and one more time, they did it with this demo.

I won’t talk a lot about this release for the only reason that we only have three songs on this Demo but the three songs are all promising. It’s clear that the level of the band is still improving; I have a good proof with these three tracks. Oki it’s maybe not really innovative but all the songs are catchy as hell and their powerful riffs don’t suffer of any comparisons with the ones of the masters of the genre. But that’s not all, Nailed Coil doesn’t play a basic music and you’ll be able to find some good guitars solos too. No really there is a lot of work on this Demo.

This is just a demo of three songs yes, but the production is more than professional and I don’t see why it couldn’t work for Nailed Coil. If they still improve their music like they’re actually doing it right now, I’m ready to bet some beers that we will see them on a good label soon. At least believe me, this Demo is even better than the precedent one so it should work for them….

One more time, Nailed Coil produces a really interesting CD. This is maybe not really innovative but at least it’s really efficient and in the style no doubt that the band from Finland will have one day the level to compete with the leaders of the genre. Have a look on this demo if you can but pray with me too, to have a real album soon.

Nailed Coil on vuonna 2002 perustettu kotimainen, mukavan ilmeikästä ja tarmokasta metallia soittava kokoonpano. Kotistudion antia on promo-levy, This Is My War, joka sisältää kolme raitaa. Jälki on yllättävän siistiä. Soundit ovat melkein kohdallaan, eikä kuuntelua häiritse säätöjen sekavuus. Taidoista ei ole puutetta. Bändi pelaa hyvin yhteen, ja on onnistunut tuottamaan kasan kelvollista tavaraa. Solistin äänenkäyttö ei jää pelkkään huutoon, ja soittajat pääsevät osoittamaan kunnolla taitonsa.

Ongelmana ovat biisien rakenteet, joihin ei ole saatu kunnollista muotoa. Materiaalista ei ole todellakaan puutetta, mutta sen karsiminen ja lopullinen järjestäminen toimivaksi kokonaisuudeksi ei ole kovin onnistunutta. Ensimmäinen raita, This Is My War, alkaa räväkästi, ja biisi rullaa hyvin eteenpäin. Osioita pyritään toistamaan alussa, mutta lopussa tapahtuva siirtymä hitaampaan tempoon ei toimi. Lopun rauhallinen meno onkin yllättävä ratkaisu. Oikeastaan koko biisin ajan tuntuu siltä, ettei tiedä, mihin suuntaan ollaan kulkemassa. Ennakoimattomuudellakin on rajansa. Jos kuuntelija unohtaa jo heti alkumetreillä, miten biisi edes alkoi, voi silloin olla paikallaan rakenteen tarkistus. Biisin läpi tulisi kulkea edes jonkinlainen punainen lanka. Tämän langan puuttuminen on harmi, sillä kyseisen raidan materiaali saa heti mielenkiinnon heräämään.

Toinen raita, My Disease, onkin jo parempi kokonaisuus. Biisin eri osat kulkevat järkevässä järjestyksessä, ja kuuntelija pysyy paremmin juonessa kiinni. Kolmas raita, The Shine, on biiseistä heikoin. Kertosäe ei tunnu istuvan biisin muuhun materiaaliin ja latistaa liikaa muuten ihan kohtuullista kipaletta. Rivakan vauhdin kasvettua kertosäe hiljentää tahtia ja vaihtaa yllättäen biisin tyyliä.

Biisit on täytetty hyvällä materiaalilla, mutta kaikkea ei kannattaisi ahtaa samaan pakettiin. Hyvästä biisistä jää usein mieleen se yksi kekseliäs juttu, joten pienestä ideasta saattaa tulla koko biisiä kannatteleva osa. Pitäytyminen muutamassa hyvässä kohdassa riittää. Nailed Coil on kuitenkin onnistunut kokoamaan levyn, jonka kuuntelu jättää mieleen kuvan yhtyeestä, jolla on taidot ja ideat hallussa.
